Volleyball Service Strategies

Like in any other sport, you need to be prepared in every aspect of volleyball, as they are all very important. One of these aspects is the service. It's central for any player of your team to develop a good service technique on order to raise your chances of winning.

Passing the ball across the pitch is the first step in the development of a good service. However there are more tactics you can implement to achieve a higher number of aces for your team:

  • 1.You have to route the service direction to the less technical player in the other team, taking into account past encounters. This also involves a deep study of the opponents previous the games.
  • 2.If you do not know which player to send a difficult pass to, you must route the service to the tallest player. They usually play exclusively on the front line (i.e. the central player), and do not practice the development of a good pass very often.
  • 3.If a player has just entered the game, route your service to him or her. This player has not had much time to warm up and get into the game’s rhythm. It is a good way to push him away.
  • 4.Also, rout your service to the players that have been in play for a long while. They may still be tired from previous moves, and this often will make them make mistakes at the time of a pass.
  • 5.Route service to any player that shows signs of anger or displeasure. His or her mental state may not be in the game and that can make him/her the perfect target for a strong service.
  • 6.Route service to any player who has just given a bad pass. Such a player’s mental state is still in figuring the error just committed out instead of receiving the above service. If the player continues to give bad passes, continue routing the service that way until he/she gives a good pass or the coach decides to change that player (and if this happens follow tip #3).
