PIT

Back to Drills Articles

By: Abby Gerken - About Volleyball

A volleyball clubhouse drill.

The coach stands on the court, at the middle of the net facing the back line. The coach is in the classic setters position. The player is on the same side of the court, in ready position, near middle back. All other players shag around the side and end lines, and one player hands the balls to coach.

Coach hits (hard) or tips ball to player. The player attempts to make a controlled pass back to the coach, who is in the setter position. It is also fun to set a ball just over the player's head. This game is meant to progress very fast. As soon, as the player passes the ball, the coach should hit another ball.

If a player falls to the floor, try to keep them on the floor. This will give test their ability to pass from odd positions.

The drill will take about 20 minutes for 10-12 players, depending on how long you take between hits, how many balls you have, and how fast the players are.

There are many variations to PIT.

Players can stay in the pit for a certain length of time, or they must get a certain number of consecutive touches, or they must simply get a certain number of touches (not consecutively).
