The United States has the advantage in sports to have a really good variety of sports in all the country professionally and in some other levels of competitions like junior and school competitions but after an recount of the most popular, more play and with more quantity of players in all their categories in male and female divisions we can find after the basketball, that the more popular without doubts is the volleyball.
Volleyball remains second in the list but with huge numbers in its favor, for example, according with the studies of people who plays sports they are approximately 30 million participating players just in the United States in both categories indoor volleyball and Sand or Beach volleyball and has the largest international sport federation of the world (including FIFA) with over 800 million participants world wide.
This is the FIVB (Federation International of Volleyball) that has 217 national federations with obviously a very good participation of the players from United States but also is important the participation of other big groups like the most direct competition for the USA that is Brazil and the growing of federations and teams from European countries that are turning in great competitors.
The growing of the sport could be manage thank you to the good administration and quantity of tournaments in the country for all ages and divisions that this sport offers to people, this also could explain the huge popularity because people of both sexes play almost in equal form this discipline for example in indoor volleyball is very equal almost 50-50, the change is in sand volleyball where women only have the 37% of the participation.
Competitions and tournaments with high players participation, in some cases like Beach volleyball this sport can be take as a "life style" with it's own music and clothing are reason that make volleyball something even more that just a simple ball game and takes part of the popular culture of all kind of people (specially young athletes) in the United States.
