* Practises determined defence.
* 1 coach with a ball cart facing 1 active player who is in a corner of the sports hall.
* Inactive players collect the loose balls and return them to the ball cart.
* Coach feeds a stream of hard down balls, dumps and tosses to the player who digs them back.
* The next feed is made as soon as the previous feed is dug.
* The coach should vary the feeds to either side and in front of the player to make her move and recover.
* Run the drill for a minute or so and then replace the active player.
* Practises defending then spiking, also practises the setter with a more realistic first ball.
* Uses one side of a full court with a setter at 3ish and a line of hitters at 4 each with a ball.
* Hitter feeds ball to setter who hits a down ball back to the hitter.
* Hitter digs the ball back to the setter who then sets to the hitter.
* Use a volley instead of a down ball for weaker diggers.
* Variation: after spiking, hitter becomes a blocker for 1 or 2 hits.
* Variation: both first and second in the hitting queue act as diggers with the second player feeding to the initial ball to the setter.
* This drill is played on a full court.
* Players are distributed as follows.
* One defender on left side of court.
* One person serving from right side of court.
* One target player in setter position.
* This is on both sides of the court so that 6 players are active at any one time.
* The rest of the players line up off court waiting to either serve or defend (distributed evenly).
* Players follow the ball. So after serving, they go to where they served to in order to defend. After passing the ball to the setter, they become the target in the setter position. After catching the ball in the setter position they go to serve from the same side of the court.
* If a player can not serve accurately to the defender on the other side of the court, they should move in court sufficiently that they can do so.
Popular drill aka 10' Line Game or simply 10-Foot Game. A conditioning drill which encourages player awareness of movement on both sides of the net.
* Play on a short court up to the attack line.
* Divide the players into 2 teams of 4-8 on court.
* Coach with ball cart initiates rally with a free ball from the side.
* Three touch volleyball only.
* After player has touched ball she must run to the normal baseline and touch it before rejoining the game.
* Play a set to 15 (2 clear) or match of best of 5 sets to 5 (capped).
* Variation: team which loses point does 2 forfeits (eg crunches, push-ups) and coach feeds next ball before entire team is ready.
* Variation: winning team serves (usually a volley) rather than coach feeding a free ball.
A fun drill to liven up a session and get players moving.
* Full court drill with players in teams of 3 (with an odd 2 or 4 if necessary) each with a ball.
* Start with 2 teams on court with the inactive players queueing behind the serving baseline.
* Server serves and teams play out the rally.
* Points are only scored by the receiving team.
* Modified beach rules: no tips and volleys perpendicular to the shoulders.
* Winning team moves to the receiving court if not already there.
* A new team comes on to serve.
* Losing team collects loose ball and joins the queue.
* Winning team is first to 10 points, or team with most points at the end of a set period.
* Variation: three touch volleyball only.
* Variation: server can serve as soon as receiving team is on court rather than necessarily ready (or play to coach's whistle).
